Ignition Timing: Adjustments

ADJUSTMENT CONDITIONS:
Coolant temperature, 170°F-190°F.
All accessories, Off.
Transmission, N (Neutral).
Parking Brake, ON.

Idle Speed Connection:

1. Insert a paper clip (from harness side), in the pin connector located between the noise filter and the ignition coil, and connect the tachometer.

Tachometer Connector Usage:

Caution: The connector should not be separated. The paper clip should be inserted along the terminal surface. The paper clip should be inserted at the correct side. If it is inserted incorrectly, the paper clip may become caught and cannot be removed.

2. Connect timing light.

3. With the engine stopped, connect a lead wire, between the terminal for ignition timing adjustment (located in the engine compartment) and ground.
4. START and run the engine at curb idle speed.

Standard value
Curb idle speed 700 ± 100 rpm

5. Check base ignition timing and adjust if necessary.

Standard value
Base Timing 5° ± 2°BTDC

6. If the timing is incorrect, loosen the distributor's holding nut, and then turn the distributor until the timing is correct.

7. After adjustment, securely tighten holding nut.
CAUTION: Be careful, when tightening the nut, that the distributor does not move.

8. Check that timing did not move when tightening the nut. STOP the engine.
9. Disconnect the lead wire connected at step 2.
10. START and run the engine at curb idle speed.
11. Check to be sure that the idle ignition timing is correct.
