Fuel Pump: Service and Repair

Fuel Tank, Exploded View:

REMOVAL

1. Disconnect the fuel pump connector, located on the forward end of the fuel tank.
2. START and RUN the engine until it stalls, then turn the ignition switch to OFF.
3. Disconnect the battery negative terminal.
4. Remove the fuel tank cap to relieve tank pressure.
5. Remove the access panel in bed if equipped.
6. Drain the fuel.
7. Disconnect the fuel high pressure hose.
CAUTION: Cover with a shop towel to avoid gasoline spillage from any residual fuel in the line.
8. Loosen the nuts on the fuel tank retainer straps to the ends of each stud (do not remove completely).
9. Remove the fuel pump installation screws and the bolt for holding the fuel pump (at the lower side of the fuel tank), and then remove it from the fuel tank.

INSTALLATION

1. Install the gasket, taking care to properly align it with the three positioning projections.
2. As the fuel pump is re-installed, align the three positioning projections with the holes in the fuel pump. The bolt at the lower side of the fuel tank should be installed first. Care should be taken at this time to insure that the gasket is properly seated.
3. Connect the fuel high pressure hose.
4. Tighten the fuel tank retaining straps.
5. Return sufficient fuel to the tank to operate the system. Check for fuel leaks.
