SYMPTOM/CONDITION
A rubbing sound or clicking noise on suspension travel may be the result of a stabilizer bar contacting the frame at the jounce bumper striker pad. This condition may be the result of a misaligned stabilizer bar. In the event of a misaligned stabilizer bar, the following repair procedure should be used to re-center the stabilizer bar.
DIAGNOSIS
Inspect the overall condition of the front frame rails and stabilizer bar-to-frame rail mounting brackets. A damaged frame or misaligned brackets can cause a misaligned stabilizer bar.
FIGURE 1 BUMPERPAD:
After determining the frame and the stabilizer bar mounting bar brackets are not the cause, inspect the jounce bumper striker pad outboard edge for scrape or rub marks. A stabilizer bar that interferes will scrape the pad as shown in Figure 1.
REPAIR PROCEDURE
1. Remove the stabilizer as described on page 17-5 of the 1990 Rear Wheel Drive Truck Dakota Service Manual Publication # 81-370-0110.
2. Measure the center to center distance of the eye-rings. The distance should be 44 3/16 inches +/- 1/8 inch (1122 mm +/- 3 mm).
3. Align the rubber bushings to be 8 1/4 inches +/- 1/16 inch (209 mm +/- 1.5 mm) from the center of each eye-ring as shown in Figure 2.
4. Install the stabilizer bar as described in the service manual and to ensure a "centered" stabilizer bar, be sure the bar to frame jounce bumper striker pad distance is the same on both sides. This procedure can be used for all model years affected.
