Front Axle Service
REMOVAL
1. Loosen the wheel lug nuts and the hub nut while the vehicle is on the surface with the brakes applied.
The hub and the CV drive shaft stub shaft splines are engaged within the wheel hub hearing and are retained by the hub nut.
2. Raise and support the vehicle at a comfortable working height. Remove the skid plate.
3. Remove the cotter pin, the nut lock, and the spring washer from the stub shaft.
4. Remove the wheel hub not and the washer from the stub shaft. Remove the wheel/tire from the hub.
5. Remove the bolts that attach the inner CV joint housing flange to the axle shaft flange.
6. Support the drive shaft at the CV joint housings and separate the stub shaft splines from the hub bearing splines by pulling inward at the outer CV joint. Do pull on the rubber boot. Remove the CV drive shaft from the vehicle.
INSTALLATION
CAUTION: For all service procedures involving separation of the CV drive shaft and the steering knuckle, thoroughly clean the bearing seal contact surface on the steering knuckle and on the CV drive shaft wear sleeve and lubricate the contact surface of both components (including the seal lip) with MOPAR Multi-Purpose Lubricant (Or an equivalent product) prior to installation of the CV drive shaft.
1. If the bearing seal is being replaced, fill the cavity between the bearing seal lip and the steering knuckle. Lightly coat the seal lip with MOPAR Multi-Purpose Lubricant, or with an equivalent product. Position the bearing seal in the bore at the inner aide of the steering knuckle and seat it with Tool C-469t.
2. Lubricate the outer (contact) surface area around the perimeter of the CV drive shaft wear sleeve with a 1/4 inch 16 mm) bead of MOPAR Multi-Purpose Lubricant, or with an equivalent product.
3. Insert the CV drive shaft stub shaft into the wheel hub bearing and engage the splines.
4. Attach the inner CV joint flange to the axle shaft flange and tighten the bolts with 90 Nm 165 ft-lbs) torque.
5. Clean if necessary, all foreign material from the stub shaft threads and install the hub washer and nut.
6. Apply the brakes and tighten the wheel hub nut with 258 Nm (190 ft-lbs) torque.
7. Install the spring washer, the nut lock and a replacement cotter pin at the end of the stub shaft. Wrap the replacement cotter pin prongs tightly around the nut lock.
8. Install the wheel/tire, remove the supports, lower the vehicle to the surface and tighten the lug nuts in the correct sequence with 115 Nm (85 ft-lbs torque).
