Partial A/C System Charge

Fig. 8 A/C System Charging:

Refer to Air Conditioning/Specifications/Capacities for A/C Data Table for refrigerant capacities.

1. Attach manifold gauge set.
2. Open windows of the passenger compartment and set the air conditioning controls to A/C, RECIRC and low blower speed.
3. Start the engine and allow it to reach normal operating temperature.
4. If the compressor clutch does not engage, disconnect the low pressure cut-off switch and place a jumper wire across the terminals in the connector boot. If the compressor still does not engage, a problem exists in the clutch feed circuit. Repair circuit as necessary.
5. Run engine at 1400 RPM.
6. Charge the system through the suction side of the air conditioning system with enough refrigerant to clear the sight glass of bubbles.
7. When the sight glass clears, note the weight of the refrigerant supply drum or the level in the charging cylinder, then add an additional 12 ounces of refrigerant to system.
8. Remove jumper wire from low pressure cut-off switch boot, then connect boot to switch.
9. Test the over all performance of the air conditioning system refer to, Powertrain Management/Computers and Control Systems/Testing and Inspection/Procedures.
10. Close all valves on the charging equipment, then disconnect the hoses from the service ports.
11. Install service port protective caps.
