Engine: Service and Repair

1. Disconnect battery cables and remove battery, then drain cooling system.
2. Mark position of hinges for reassembly, then remove hood.
3. Remove radiator and heater hoses, then the radiator. Position fan shroud aside.
4. On models equipped with A/C, discharge refrigerant from system.
5. On all models, remove vacuum lines, then the distributor with spark plug wires attached.
6. On carbureted models, remove throttle linkage, then the carburetor.
7. On fuel injected models, remove throttle body linkage, then the throttle body.
8. On all models, remove all engine electrical connectors.
9. Remove air conditioning hoses and power steering hoses, if equipped.
10. Remove starter motor, alternator, charcoal canister and horns.
11. Disconnect exhaust pipe at manifold.
12. On models with manual transmission, remove transmission refer to Transmission and Drivetrain/Manual Transmission/Transaxle/Service and Repair.
13. On models with automatic transmission, proceed as follows:
a. Remove bellhousing attaching bolts and inspection plate.
b. Attach C-clamp on bottom of transmission torque converter housing to prevent torque converter from falling out.
c. Remove torque converter driveplate attaching bolts from torque converter driveplate. Mark converter and driveplate to aid in reassembly.
d. Support transmission using suitable floor jack, then disconnect engine from torque converter driveplate.
14. On all models, install suitable lifting fixture to cylinder head.
15. Install suitable engine hoist to lifting fixture, then remove engine front mount bolts.
16. Remove engine from vehicle.
17. Reverse procedure to install.
