Throttle Position Sensor: Service and Repair

Throttle Position Sensor Installation:

Removal/Installation

1. Disconnect the negative battery terminal.
2. Disconnect TPS electrical connector.
3. Remove the mounting screws (2), and lift TPS straight up to remove it from the injection pump throttle shaft.

NOTE: The TPS has a hex shaped head that protrudes from its underside. This hex shaped head fits into a hex shaped socket in the injection pumps throttle shaft.

4. Install new TPS on throttle shaft and install screws. If the TPS does not align with the opening of the throttle shaft, remove the TPS mounting bracket from the injection pump and install the TPS into the socket of the throttle shaft. Position the TPS so the mounting bracket has to be rotated clockwise to align the mounting holes. The hex head on the TPS should be flush or a little above the top of the hex socket on the throttle shaft.
5. If the TPS mounting bracket has been removed, torque the mounting screws to 60 lbs in (7 N-m). Torque the TPS mounting screws to 20 lbs in (2 N-m).
6. Connect the TPS wiring connector.
7. Connect the negative battery cable.
8. Adjust the TPS. Refer to ADJUSTMENT PROCEDURES.
