Engine: Service and Repair

Engine and transmission should be removed as an assembly.

1. Disconnect battery ground cable, then remove hood.
2. Remove air cleaner assembly.
3. Drain coolant from radiator and transmission oil from transmission.
4. Remove radiator shrouds, as needed, then disconnect radiator hoses and remove radiator.
5. Disconnect heater hoses and brake booster vacuum hose.
6. Disconnect alternator wiring harness.
7. Disconnect clutch cable from transmission.
8. Disconnect accelerator cable and fuel hoses.
9. Disconnect starter motor wiring harness.
10. Disconnect engine ground cable and coil high tension cables.
11. Disconnect water temperature gauge connector.
12. Remove power steering pump, if equipped.
13. On models equipped with A/C, discharge system, then disconnect air conditioner hoses from compressor.
14. On all models, disconnect oil pressure switch or pressure gauge harness unit.
15. Remove radiator assembly.
16. Remove exhaust pipe from exhaust manifold pipe.
17. On rear wheel drive models, remove undercover. On four wheel drive models, remove undercover, under skid plate and transfer case protector.
18. On all models, disconnect speedometer cable from transmission.
19. Disconnect back-up switch harness. On four wheel drive models, remove four wheel drive indicator light switch harness.
20. On all models, remove propeller shaft or shafts and gearshift lever assembly.
21. On four wheel drive models, proceed as follows:
a. Using a suitable jack support transfer case.
b. Remove transfer case mounting bracket and support insulator.
c. Remove plate from side frame and detach transfer case mounting bracket from transfer case.
22. On all models, using suitable engine lifting device, remove engine and transmission assembly diagonally out of engine compartment.
23. Remove transmission attaching bolts, noting length and position for installation, then remove transmission.
24. Reverse procedure to install, tightening all bolts to specifications. On models equipped with A/C, recharge A/C system.
