On-Board Diagnostic Check

INSPECTION PROCEDURE USING A VOLTMETER

Self-Diagnostic Connector Grounded:

1. Connect the positive lead of an analogue voltmeter to the self-diagnosis terminal and the negative lead to the terminal ground.

2. Turn on the ignition switch. The engine control unit's memory contents will start immediately.

(a) If the system is in normal condition (no codes in memory), the voltmeter pointer will not deflect.

(B) If the system has stored codes, the voltmeter pointer will deflect to indicate the malfunction code number. If plural items are activated, the codes will be indicated sequentially from the smallest code number. If codes are stored, refer to COMPUTERIZED ENGINE CONTROLS

New for 1991
When the Ignition Timing Adjustment Terminal is shorted to ground during ignition timing inspection/adjustment procedures, the Control Unit will input a Code 36 into its memory and illuminate the Malfunction Indicator Light.
