A/T - Thrust Plate Selection Procedure

BULLETIN: # 081

DATE: November 1991

SUBJECT: Thrust Plate Selection

APPLICATION: Chrysler

Thrust Plate Selection Procedure:

Proper thrust plate selection is very important to prevent 3-4 bind-up, slipping in reverse, and no "engine braking".

Use this method to choose the proper thrust plate thickness.

Step 1: Assemble entire overdrive section.

Step 2: Support extension housing upright in a vise or holding fixture.

Step 3: Lay a straight-edge across the extension housing gasket surface.

Step 4: Using a depth micrometer or a vernier caliper, measure the distance to the sliding hub bearing seat, WITH THE BEARING REMOVED. Figure 1.

Step 5: Measure in 4 places, 90 degrees apart.

Step 6: Add all 4 measurements together, then divide this number by 4. This is the AVERAGE MEASUREMENT.

Step 7: Measure the thickness of the straight-edge, and subtract this amount from the AVERAGE MEASUREMENT.

Step 8: Refer to the chart for selection. Figure 2.

EXAMPLE ONLY

Measurement

1 1.491
2 1.488
3 1.492
4 1.489
------
TOTAL 5.960
DIVIDE by 4

= 1.490----> (AVERAGE MEASUREMENT)

SUBTRACT .158-----> (STRAIGHT-EDGE THICKNESS)
1.332-----> Compare this number to the chart.

In this example our thrust plate selection Would be part # 4431587, which is .183 - .185 thick.
