GROUP: TRANSMISSION

DATE: April 22, 1991

SUBJECT: Delayed Part Throttle UpShift, Harsh Downshift, 1991 AN with 5.2L Engine & A-500 Transmission

1991 (AN) DAKOTA/DAKOTA SPORT/DAKOTA CAB & CHASSIS

SYMPTOM/MNDITION:

Some 1991 Dakota trucks built before MDH 10-16-XX equipped with 5.2L engine and A-500 automatic transmission may exhibit, delayed part throttle upshifts, harsh downshifts and/or a harsh initial engagement (garage shift). This condition may be the result of an interference between the kickdown rod and the exhaust manifold heat control valve anti-rattle spring pin.

Figure 1:

DIAGNOSIS:

With the transmission in PARK, engine OFF, have a helper slowly depress the accelerator pedal to WOT while observing the kickdown rod in the area of the heat control valve anti-rattle spring pin (Figure 1). If the kickdown rod contacts or comes within 1/8 inch of the anti-rattle pin perform the following repair.

If there is sufficient clearance between the kickdown rod and anti-rattle pin repair transmission as required.

NOTE: IF REPAIR REQUIRES ADJUSTMENT OF THE KICKDOWN ROD REPEAT THE DIAGNOSIS STEP TO ENSURE SUFFICIENT CLEARANCE IS MAINTAINED.

PARTS REQUIRED:

1 Kickdown Rod PN 52077985

REPAIR PROCEDURE:

This repair involves replacing and adjusting the kickdown rod.
