SUBJECT: 3-4 Upshift/Downshift Noise A500 & A518 Transmission


MODELS:

1988 - 1991 (AB) DODGE RAM VAN/WAGON

(AN) DAKOTA/DAKOTA SPORT/DAKOTA CAB & CHASSIS


SYMPTOM/CONDITION:

Some vehicles equipped with the A500 and A518 transmissions may exhibit a noise (rattle) during transmission upshifts from 3rd to 4th gear. This noise may also be present during a downshift from 4th to 3rd gear. But, is not present after the upshift/downshift is completed. The condition is the result of an overdrive clutch pack vibration.


DIAGNOSIS:

Road test the vehicle. Perform several 3 --> 4 upshifts and 4 --> 3 downshifts. If the noise (rattle) is observed only during the 3 <-- --> 4 upshift/downshift, perform the following repair procedure.

If a noise is observed after the 3 --> 4 upshift/downshift is completed or during or after a 1 <-- --> 2 <-- --> 3 upshift/downshift, inspect the transmission/transfer case shift linkage for loose or worn components.


PARTS REQUIRED:

AR Clutch Disc PN 4461162
1 Gasket, Extension Adapter PN 4531192
1 Pan Gasket (A500) PN 4295875
1 Pan Gasket (A518) PN 2464324


REPAIR PROCEDURE:

This repair involves the removal of the overdrive unit and replacement of the overdrive clutch discs.

1. Remove the overdrive as outlined in the appropriate service manual.

2. Remove the overdrive clutch pack retaining ring and remove the overdrive clutch pack.


3. Assemble the overdrive clutch pack using the appropriate number of new clutch discs PN 4461162.

4. Install the overdrive clutch pack retaining ring.

5. Install the overdrive using the new gasket PN 4531192, following the procedure outlined in the appropriate service manual.

6. Fill the transmission to the specified level with ATF 7176 fluid.
