Technician Safety Information
WHEN SERVICING THE FUEL SYSTEM;- Put a "CAUTION: FLAMMABLE" sign in the workshop.
- Ensure the shop is equipped with a proper fire extinguisher.
- Wear appropriate eye protection.
- Use caution when working near the catalytic converter to prevent the possibility of burns. Converter temperatures can exceed 1,000°F.
- Be sure to disconnect battery ground cable before any service work is done.
- Place a suitable container under the connection to be opened.
- Slowly open connection, allow pressure to escape, and catch any spilled fuel in an appropriate container.
NOTE: If available, use system bleed valve (schrader) to relieve pressure.
- Disconnect line or hose, then plug all fittings.
- Put any drained fuel in an explosive-proof container and put the lid on securely.
GENERAL SAFETY PRECAUTIONS
- Always wear appropriate eye protection.
- Block the drive wheels before beginning any service with the vehicle on the ground.
- Never work under a vehicle supported only by a jack. Use jackstands, on a flat and level hard surface, for safe support.
- Exercise care when performing spark test, always use non-conductive ignition wire pliers, Ignition systems present a shock hazard.
- Use caution when working near the catalytic converter to prevent the possibility of burns. The temperatures within the converter can exceed 1200°F.
- Exercise care when working with spring or tension loaded fasteners such as E-clips, or snap rings, careless removal can cause personal injury.
FLOODED ENGINE PRECAUTIONS
- Keep all flames, sparks and high heat sources away from flooded engines.
WARNING: Do not disengage the coil cable from the distributor cap to create an additional spark gap, while attempting to start a flooded engine. Doing so may ignite fuel vapors resulting in explosion or fire.
- When draining oil contaminated by fuel, make sure the vehicle is located in a safe, well ventilated area.
- Because of the possibility of raw fuel coming out of the spark plug holes when cranking a flooded engine after the spark plugs have been removed, the ignition system must be disabled to reduce the possibility of a spark causing ignition of the raw fuel.
SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM (SRS) SAFETY PRECAUTIONS
NOTE: The following information applies only to vehicles equipped with airbag(s).
WARNING: Unintentional activation of an airbag due to improper removal, handling or installation of airbag, can lead to personal injury.
- Do not use electrical test equipment on SRS circuits. (All SRS wiring harnesses have yellow outer insulation. SRS related components are located in the steering column, center console, dash, and front fenders.)
- Disassembling or replacing airbags and related components requires special cautions and tools. SEE Air Bags and Seat Belts / Air Bags (Supplemental Restraint Systems).
