NO.: 07-07-92
GROUP: Cooling
DATE: Dec. 14, 1992

SUBJECT:
Serpentine Drive Belt Noise
3.3L and 3.8L Engines

MODELS:

1991-1/2 - 1993 (AC) Dynasty/New Yorker/New Yorker Salon

1991 - 1993 (AS) Caravan/Grand Caravan/Caravan CV
Voyager/Grand Voyager/Town & Country
1991-1/2 - 1993 (AY) Imperial/New Yorker Fifth Avenue

SYMPTOM/CONDITION:

"Chirping" noise being generated from the drive and accessory pulley area of the engine while the engine is running. The condition is most likely experienced while operating the engine during wet or high humidity conditions.

DIAGNOSIS:

Use a spray bottle filled with water to spray the grooved side of the serpentine drive belt while the engine is running. If the noise subsides, and as the belt dries the noise returns, serpentine belt misalignment is the problem.

REPAIR PROCEDURE:

This bulletin involves chamfering the hole in the power steering pump bracket that the tensioner attaching bolt passes through and replacement of the tensioner and serpentine drive belt.

1. Place the vehicle on a hoist.

2. Remove the accessory drive splash shield.

3. Remove the serpentine drive belt.

4. Remove the automatic tensioner.

5. Cut a .040" - .050" chamfer into the hole on the aluminum power steering pump bracket that the automatic tensioner attaching bolt passes through (refer to Figures 1 and 2). A 90 degree deburring or countersink drill bit can be used by hand to cut the chamfer without removing the power steering pump bracket (refer to Figure 3). A hand held deburring tool can also be used but it may need to be shortened due to the limited work space (refer to Figure 4).

6. Clean the area of all loose metal chips created during the chamfering of the hole. This cleaning is critical to the success of the repair because a loose metal chip could change the angle at which the tensioner is mounted.

7. Install the new automatic tensioner P/N 4483214. Be sure the build code stamped on the tensioner is 392B1 or later (example 402, 412, 422... 013, 023...). The 392 stands for the 39th week of 1992, 023 stands for the 2nd week of 1993.

8. Install the new serpentine drive belt selected from the PARTS REQUIRED list (refer to Figure 5 for proper routing).

9. Reinstall the accessory drive splash shield.
