SUBJECT: Spark Advance Adjustment Procedure
MODELS:
1992 (AC) DYNASTY/NEW YORKER SALON (AS) CARAVAN/GRAND CARAVAN/CARAVAN C/V VOYAGER/GRAND VOYAGER/TOWN & COUNTRY (AY) IMPERIAL/NEW YORKER FIFTH AVENUE
DISCUSSION:
The 3.3L/3.8L engines for 1992 are not equipped with knock sensors and may exhibit spark knock under certain conditions. Therefore, spark advance can be adjusted on these engines using the DRB II. This feature permits retarding the ignition timing on DIS (Distributorless Ignition Systems) by up to 6 degrees, in 2 degree steps. Ignition timing will then be retarded by the selected amount across the entire engine operating range.
DIAGNOSIS:
Before adjusting spark advance the following two conditions must be met:
1. The vehicle must be using fuel with an octane rating of at least 85 R+M/2.
2. The EGR system (if so equipped) must be functioning normally.
Vehicles exhibiting spark knock and meeting these conditions can have the following procedure performed.
