Oxygen Sensor: Service and Repair
Oxygen Sensor And Connector:
Removal
Warning: Exhaust manifold becomes very hot during engine operation.
Caution: Do not pull on or cut sensor wires, when removing sensor.
1. Disconnect oxygen sensor electrical connector.
Caution: Use of excessive force may damage threads in exhaust manifold or pipe.
2. Using a suitable tool (tool # C-4907 or equivalent), carefully remove the sensor from exhaust manifold or pipe. Sensor may be easier to remove when engine temperature is above 120°F.
Installation
1. Clean threads in exhaust manifold with an 18 mm X 1.5 + 6E tap.
2. If a new sensor is being used, verify that the threads are coated with anti-seize compound, before installing in manifold or pipe.
3. If sensor is being reused, coat sensor threads with a nickel based anti-seize compound (Loctite 771-64 or equivalent), then install sensor in manifold or pipe.
Caution: Do not use graphite or other anti-seize compounds.
4. Torque the oxygen sensor to 20 ft-lbs (27 Nm), connect wiring.
