Shift Lever Wobble

MODELS:

1992-1993 (AD) Ram Pickup/Ram Cab Chassis

SYMPTOM/CONDITION:

Some vehicles, equipped with an NV 4500 manual transmission, may exhibit fore and aft gear shift lever movement or a light ticking noise in either third or fourth gear. The conditions may exist on vehicles with transmission part numbers: 53006841 and 53006842.

DIAGNOSIS:

Road test the vehicle at speeds above 30 mph. Verify that the movement is in the fore and aft direction. The condition can often be intensified by lightly pulling on the lever towards neutral. A light ticking or tapping noise may also occur either with or without lever movement. If either the movement or the noise is evident perform the repair procedure.

THE REPAIR PACKAGE P/N 4740825 IS ONLY REQUIRED ON TRANSMISSIONS BUILT PRIOR TO 8/12/92. THE TRANSMISSION BUILD DATE CAN BE FOUND ON A TAG LOCATED ON THE PTO COVER.

REPAIR PROCEDURE:

1. Following the procedures outlined in the appropriate service manual, drain the transmission fluid and remove the transmission from the vehicle.

2. Remove the shift cover assembly from the transmission. Remove the following components from the cover and set them aside for assembly later:

Tower cover boot
Stub lever retainer cup
Stub lever retainer cap
Stub lever spring
Stub lever
Vent hose and clip
Backup switch and gasket

3. Apply sealant P/N 4318083 to the new vent and install it in the cover at a 15 to 30 degree angle from the horizontal.

4. Using the procedures outlined in the service manual, remove the mainshaft assembly. Discard the drive clutch gear if required.

5. Remove the 3rd/4th gear synchronizer and 3rd gear if required. Reassemble with the new components.

6. Install the mainshaft assembly and drive clutch gear into the transmission and measure mainshaft end play using the procedure outlined in the service manual. Adjust the end play as necessary. Use the new drive gear and mainshaft retainer screws for final assembly. Tighten the drive gear screws to 235-305 in.lbs. Tighten the mainshaft screws to 300-324 in.lbs.

7. Install the over drive mainshaft gear, washer and new retaining nut. Tighten the retaining nut to 275-375 ft.lbs.

8. Install the new fork pads onto the OD Reverse shift fork. Install the shift cover assembly.

9. Install the back up light switch, Stub Lever, stub lever spring cap and cup. Install the tower boot.

10. Install the transmission and fill with 8 pints of transmission fluid P/N 4637579.
