Technician Safety Information
WARNING: Before vehicle is moved after any brake service work, be sure to obtain a firm brake pedal.ASBESTOS WARNINGS: Dust and dirt on brake parts generated during the normal use and wear of vehicle brake systems can contain asbestos fibers. Extreme care should be exercised while servicing brake assemblies or components. Breathing excessive concentrations of asbestos fibers can cause serious bodily harm, such as asbestosis and cancer.
During routine service operations, the amount of asbestos dust from brake lining wear is at a low level due to a chemical breakdown during use, and a few precautions will minimize exposure. Do not sand or grind brake linings unless suitable local exhaust ventilation equipment is used to prevent excessive asbestos exposure.
1. Wear a suitable respirator approved for asbestos dust use during all repair procedures.
2. When cleaning brake dust from brake parts, use a vacuum cleaner with a highly efficient filter system. If a suitable vacuum cleaner is not available, use a water soaked rag. Do not use compressed air or dry brush to clean brake parts.
3. Keep work area clean, using same equipment as for cleaning brake parts.
4. Properly dispose of rags and vacuum cleaner bags by placing them in plastic bags.
5. Do not smoke or eat while working on brake systems.
Follow all recommended practices prescribed by the occupational safety and heath administration (OSHA) and the environmental protection agency (EPA) for the handling, processing and disposition of dust or dirt which may contain asbestos fibers.
