NO.: 21-10-92
GROUP: Transmission
DATE: May 18, 1992
SUBJECT:
Auxiliary Transmission Oil Cooler Hose Routing
NOTE:
THIS BULLETIN APPLIES TO 3.9L/5.2L AN TRUCKS BUILT PRIOR TO MARCH 3,1992 (MDH 03-03-XX) EQUIPPED WITH AN AUXILIARY TRANSMISSION OIL COOLER.
MODELS:
1992 (AN) Dakota/Dakota Sport/Dakota Cab & Chassis
DISCUSSION:
Some vehicles equipped with an auxiliary transmission oil cooler, may have the lower auxiliary oil cooler hose pinched/kinked in the area where the hose is routed between the edge of the radiator bracket and the body closure panel. This could result in transmission damage/failure due to insufficient fluid flow through the transmission oil cooler.
DIAGNOSIS:
Visually inspect the lower auxiliary oil cooler hose for kinking/pinching or damage. If the auxiliary oil cooler hose is pinched/kinked or damaged, perform the following repair procedure. Fluid condition (odor and color) should be checked to determine if any internal transmission damage has occurred.
REPAIR PROCEDURE:
This repair involves inspection, routing and/or replacement of the lower auxiliary transmission oil cooler hose and the installation of convolute tubing.
1. With the ignition key in the OFF position, disconnect the negative battery cable.
2. Remove the coolant reserve tank from the fan shroud and set it out of the way, it is not necessary to disconnect the reserve tank hose.
3. Vehicles equipped with 5.2L, remove the fan and shroud assembly as outlined in the service manual.
4. Remove the two (2) upper radiator to crossmember attaching bolts and move the radiator toward the engine, to inspect the lower auxiliary oil cooler hose.
4. If the auxiliary oil cooler hose is routed below the lower auxiliary transmission oil cooler mounting bracket as shown in Figure 1, and is pinched or kinked, replace it as outlined in step 6.
5. If the lower hose is routed correctly as shown in Figure 2, no further repair is required.
AUXILIARY TRANSMISSION OIL COOLER HOSE REPLACEMENT
6. Cut a 27 inch long piece of transmission cooler hose (PN 83506500 serviced in bulk).
7. Cut a 17 inch long piece of 5/8 inch convolute tubing (PN 4364392 service in bulk) and install it over the hose cut in step 6, two (2) inches from one end of the hose.
8. Install the hose with the convolute closest to the end onto the lower auxiliary transmission oil cooler nipple. (Figure 2)
9. Route the other end of the cooler hose above the edge of the auxiliary cooler mounting bracket to radiator side support as shown in Figure 2, and attach it to the cooler line fitting.
10. Use a small tie strap and tie the lower cooler hose to the lower cooler mounting bracket.
11. Cut an eight inch piece of 5/8 inch convolute tubing, (PN 4364392 service in bulk) and install onto the upper auxiliary oil cooler hose, two (2) inches from the cooler end of the hose through the closure panel.
12. Install the two (2) upper radiator attaching bolts.
13. Vehicles equipped with 5.2L, install the fan and shroud assembly as outlined in the service manual.
14. Install the coolant reserve tank onto the fan shroud.
15. Connect the negative battery cable.
16. Start the engine and check for leaks.
17. Check the transmission fluid level and fill to proper level using Mopar ATF Plus (Type 7176).
