DISCUSSION:

On replacement short block assemblies, RTV sealer is omitted from the rear main cap-to-block joint intentionally. Sealant must be added to the rear main cap-to-block slots, prior to installation of the oil pan gasket and oil pan. Since the oil pan is transferred from the previous engine, the only way to obtain a good seal is to apply RTV during initial assembly.

Apply RTV sealant to both sides of the rear main cap-to-block joint, see Figure 1, just before the oil pan gasket and oil pan are installed. Install the oil pan gasket and oil pan immediately after RTV application (3 minutes maximum). The RTV must not be allowed to cure prior to oil pan gasket and pan installation.

NOTE:
WHEN DOING ANY REPAIRS WHERE THE REAR MAIN BEARING CAP IS REMOVED; THE OLD RTV SHOULD BE CLEANED OFF THE BEARING CAP-TO-BLOCK JOINT AND NEW RTV APPLIED. LOCTITE 515, OR EQUIVALENT, SHOULD BE APPLIED ON EACH SIDE OF THE REAR MAIN BEARING CAP, SEE FIGURE 2, BEFORE INSTALLATION.
