SUBJECT: Delayed Upshift/Early Hard Downshift


NOTE: THIS BULLETIN APPLIES TO AB, AD, AND AN VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH 3.9/5.2L ENGINES WITH AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSIONS ONLY.

SYMPTOM/CONDITION:

Some vehicles may exhibit a delayed upshift or an early/hard downshift while at normal operating temperature.


DIAGNOSIS:

Drive vehicle until obtaining operating temperature and verify symptom/condition.


REPAIR PROCEDURE:

This is a revised adjustment procedure for the throttle valve cable.

1. With the ignition key in the OFF position, remove the air cleaner.

2. Insert a 2.8 mm (.110 - .120 in.) spacer between the idle stop and throttle lever (on throttle body), see Figure 1.

3. Press the cable lock button to release the cable, then pull the cable conduit toward rear of the vehicle until wiper is completely retracted into end of the conduit fitting, see Figure 1. Then release the cable lock button.

4. Raise the vehicle for access to the transmission throttle valve lever, see Figure 2.

5. Rotate the throttle valve lever by hand toward the front of the vehicle until ratching sound (from the cable) stops.

CAUTION: DO NOT ROTATE THE THROTTLE VALVE LEVER BEYOND THE IDLE STOP. THE LEVER, VALVE AND MANUAL LEVER SHAFT WILL BE DAMAGED IF ROTATED TOO FAR.

6. Remove the spacer and check the cable adjustment. The throttle valve lever should be against the idle stop when the lever on MPI throttle body moves off the idle position.

7. Install the air cleaner. Drive the vehicle to ensure the proper adjustment has been obtained.
