Positive Crankcase Ventilation: Description and Operation
CONSTRUCTION
All systems contain a PCV valve, crankcase air breather filter and connecting hoses.
^ This system consists of a PCV valve mounted on the cylinder head cover with a hose extending from the PCV valve to the base of the throttle body. The crankcase breather filter is mounted to the right cylinder head cover.
OPERATION
All models with gas engines have a closed crankcase ventilation system.
The PCV system operates by manifold vacuum. Filtered air is routed into the crankcase through the air cleaner hose and crankcase air breather filter. This forces crankcase vapors through the PCV valve. It is then drawn into a passage in the throttle body. Here it becomes part of the calibrated air/fuel mixture to be consumed in the combustion chamber. The PCV system constantly ventilates the crankcase to help prevent sludge formation and vapors from entering the atmosphere.
