SYMPTOM/CONDITION:

If excessive force is applied to the key, it may break off in the lock cylinder of the deck lid, tailgate or door. The most likely way the key may break is if an attempt is made to close the deck lid or tailgate using the key as a "handle". This condition occurs with keys having codes with deep cuts in the two positions nearest the head of the key.

DIAGNOSIS:

If a key is broken off in a deck lid, tailgate or door, perform the repair procedure.

PARTS REQUIRED:

2 Tumbler, Lock Cylinder 5257132
2 Key, Capsulated 4723480
2 Key, Valet 4723479

REPAIR PROCEDURE:

This bulletin involves replacing or repairing the lock cylinder with the key broken off in it, re-coding the ignition lock cylinder and cutting new keys that have shallow cuts in the two positions closest to the head of the key. The deck lid, tailgate and door lock cylinders do not required re-coding because they do not use the two positions closest to the head of the key.

1. Remove the broken off portion of the key from the lock cylinder, or replace the lock cylinder assembly using the instructions outlined in the Lock Cylinder Coding and Repair Package (P/N 5252650) to properly code the replacement lock cylinder.

2. Using the procedure outlined in Section 8D of the appropriate Technical Service Manual, remove the ignition lock cylinder.

3. Using the instructions outlined in the Lock Cylinder Coding and Repair Package (P/N 5252650), replace the two tumblers closest to the head of the key with tumbler P/N 5257132.

4. Cut new keys to match the new ignition lock cylinder tumbler sequence.

5. Record the new key cut sequence on the repair order. Be sure a copy is retained in the vehicles service file and a copy is provided to the owner because all previously recorded key code information for this vehicle is now incorrect.

6. Reinstall the ignition lock cylinder using the procedure outlined in Section 8D of the appropriate Technical Service Manual.
