Liftgate - Howling Noise Above 40 Mph

Liftgate Wind Noise
NOTE:
THIS BULLETIN APPLIES TO SHORT WHEELBASE VEHICLES ONLY.
MODELS:
1991 - 1993 (AS) Caravan/Caravan CV/Voyager
SYMPTOM/CONDITION:
A howling noise may be heard from the rear of the vehicle at speeds above 40 MPH. The noise is more noticeable, or may only be heard when the roof and liftgate are covered with moisture, such as morning dew or rain.
DIAGNOSIS:
1. Check the liftgate for flushness to the roof and body sides. Flushness should be + OR - 1.5 mm (.060 in.).
2. Check between the liftgate and roof for a 7 mm (.275 in.) gap.
3. Check between the liftgate and body sides for a 6 mm (.236 in.) gap.
NOTE:
TOLERANCE FOR LIFTGATE GAPS IS + OR - 1 MM (.040 IN.).
4. Adjust liftgate if necessary using the procedure outlined in the appropriate service manual.
PARTS REQUIRED:
1 Weatherstrip 4741941
REPAIR PROCEDURE:
This bulletin involves installing a foam weatherstrip on the roof panel flange.
1. Open the liftgate.
2. Clean the rear edge of the roof panel flange with MOPAR Super Clean (PN 4318015), MOPAR Tar/Road Oil Remover (PN 4549607), or equivalent.
3. Determine the centerline of the liftgate opening on the rear edge of the roof panel flange.
4. Remove the backing from adhesive strip on the weatherstrip (PN 4741941) and install, being sure to position the mid-point of the weatherstrip on the centerline determined in step 3 and the leading edge of the weatherstrip 15/16" + or - 1/8" from the rear edge of the roof panel, as shown in the illustrations.
NOTE:
ON SOME VEHICLES THE ADDITION OF THIS WEATHERSTRIP MAY NOT TOTALLY ELIMINATE THE NOISE BUT WILL MOVE THE SPEED AT WHICH IT OCCURS IN EXCESS OF 75 MPH AND AT A SUBSTANTIALLY REDUCED NOISE LEVEL.
