DISCUSSION:

Some 41TE transaxles may produce a buzzing noise when the gear selector is in the reverse position. This buzz condition occurs primarily in 1992 model year and some early built 1993 model year 41TE transaxles.

Two changes have been made to the valve body assembly to eliminate the reverse buzz condition.

1. A 1 mm notch was incorporated in the valve body housing at the torque convertor control valve on November 1, 1991 (build date code 1053).

2. A new valve body separator plate with reduced "T" and "Y" orifice diameters was introduced on August 5, 1992 (build date code 1331).

3. Refer to the illustration for build date code location.

DIAGNOSIS:

The noise which is similar to power steering pump noise, can be verified using the following procedure:

1. Engage the parking brake and apply the service brake.

2. Start the engine and let idle for 10 seconds.

3. Place the gear selector in reverse.

4. Let the engine idle in reverse for 15 seconds.

5. Slowly increase the engine speed to 1000 RPM and hold for 5 seconds. Then return to idle.

6. Place the gear selector in the OD position.

7. Repeat steps 3 through 6 three times.

If a noise (buzz) is heard, it can be verified as 41TE reverse buzz by the following criterion:

^ Buzz only occurs in the reverse gear position.

^ Have a second service technician hold the transaxle fluid cooler line and feel for vibration during steps 4 and 5 above.

PARTS REQUIRED:

AR Plate, Valve Body Separator 4567996

AR Assembly, Valve Body 4659044

REPAIR PROCEDURE:

This bulletin involves replacing the valve body assembly or valve body separator plate, depending on build date of the transaxle.

1. After confirming the transaxle is the source of the noise (buzz), identify the date code on the transaxle.

2. If the build date code falls between 0874 and 1052, replace the complete valve body assembly with P/N 4659044. Use the procedure in the appropriate technical service manual.

If the build date code falls between 1053 and 1331, replace the valve body separator plate with P/N 4567996. Use the procedure in the appropriate technical service manual.

The reverse buzz condition has been eliminated in all 41TE transaxles built after August 4, 1992 (build date code 1330).
