SUBJECT:
Check Engine Light Illuminated (With No Diagnostic Trouble Codes)

THIS BULLETIN SUPERSEDES TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN 18-04-94 DATED APR. 1, 1994 WHICH SHOULD BE REMOVED FROM YOUR FILES. THIS BULLETIN CONTAINS ADDITIONAL DIAGNOSTIC INFORMATION AND REPAIR INSTRUCTIONS. THE LABOR OPERATION NO. AND TIME HAVE BEEN REVISED TO REFLECT THIS CHANGE. CHANGES ARE HIGHLIGHTED WITH **ASTERISKS**.

NOTE:
THIS BULLETIN APPLIES TO VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH A 3.3L ENGINE, THE 41TE TRANSAXLE, CALIFORNIA EMISSIONS AND BUILT PRIOR TO 2/22/93 (MDH 02-22-XX).

NOTE:
IF THE REPAIR LISTED IN TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN NO. 09-13-93 OR 18-12-93 HAS BEEN APPLIED TO THE VEHICLE, THE REPAIR FOR THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT MALFUNCTION IS ALREADY INSTALLED.

SYMPTOM/CONDITION:

Check engine light illuminated and no Diagnostic Trouble Codes are displayed.

DIAGNOSIS:

Using the Mopar Diagnostic System (MDS) or the Scan Tool (DRB II or III) with appropriate diagnostic procedure manual, verify that all vehicle engine systems are functioning as designed. If Trouble Codes (Diagnostic Trouble Codes) are present, record them on the repair order for future reference, and repair as necessary. If no codes are present and all systems are functioning correctly, **the condition could be caused by an EGR malfunction along with a PCM diagnostic error** and the following repair should be made.

PCM (Powertrain Control Module) RE-PROGRAMMING

This repair involves selectively erasing and programming the Powertrain Control Module with new software (calibrations) **and inspection of the exhaust gas recirculation system**.

EQUIPMENT/PARTS REQUIRED:

1 CH1000 Scan Tool (DRBII)

1 # A115 (Ref. 09-13-93/18-12-93) Flash Programming Cartridge

NOTE:
THIS CARTRIDGE WAS SUPPLIED WITH TSB 09-13-93 OR 18-12-93.

1 CC2000 Standard Engine Diagnostic Cable

1 CH1500 Flash Programming Adapter

1 4669020 Authorized Software Update Label

1 4275086 Authorized Modification Label

MULTI-PART NUMBER FLASH RE-PROGRAMMING INSTRUCTIONS

1. Insert the flash programming cartridge into the DRBII.

2. Connect the DRBII to the flash programming adapter.

3. Connect the flash programming adapter to the engine 6-way cable.

4. Connect the engine 6-way cable to the engine diagnostic connector.

5. Connect the engine 6-way cable red battery clip to the positive terminal of the vehicle battery.

6. Turn the vehicle ignition on.





7. The DRBII will power up and prompt through the sequence of windows as shown.

8. When the update is complete, turn the vehicle ignition off.

If an error happens, write down the error message (off the Scan Tool screen). Then press MODE and ATM keys together on the Scan Tool to retry (reboot).

The under hood temperature during programming must be between (minus) -40 degrees F (-40 degrees C) and +185 degrees F (+85 degrees C) .

9. **Following the procedures in the 1993 Van/Wagon Service Manual (Publication No. 81-370-3105), perform the Exhaust Gas Recirculation System Test and the EGR Gas Flow Test listed on pages 25-12 and 25-13. Repair as required.**

10. Type the necessary information on the "Authorized Software Update Label" and attach to the PCM.





11. Type the necessary information on the Authorized Modification Label and attach the label near the VECI Label.
