4 Wheel Drive

Engine and transmission should be removed as an assembly.

1. Disconnect battery ground cable.
2. Remove air cleaner assembly.
3. Mark hood hinge position, then remove hood.
4. Drain coolant from radiator and transmission oil from transmission.
5. Remove radiator shrouds, as needed, then disconnect radiator hoses and remove radiator.
6. Disconnect heater hoses and brake booster vacuum hose.
7. Disconnect alternator wiring harness.
8. Disconnect clutch cable from transmission.
9. Relieve fuel pressure as outlined under Fuel Delivery and Air Induction/ Service and Repair.
10. Disconnect accelerator cable and fuel hoses.
11. Disconnect starter motor wiring harness.
12. Disconnect engine ground cable and coil high tension cables.
13. Disconnect water temperature gauge connector.
14. Remove power steering pump, if equipped.
15. On models equipped with A/C, discharge system, then disconnect air conditioner hoses from compressor.
16. Disconnect oil pressure switch or pressure gauge harness unit.
17. Remove radiator assembly.
18. Remove exhaust pipe from exhaust manifold pipe.
19. Remove undercover, under skid plate and transfer case protector.
20. Disconnect speedometer cable from transmission.
21. Disconnect back-up switch harness.
22. Remove 4WD indicator light switch harness.
23. Remove propeller shaft or shafts and gearshift lever assembly.
24. Proceed as follows:
a. Using a suitable jack support transfer case.
b. Remove transfer case mounting bracket and support insulator.
c. Remove plate from side frame and detach transfer case mounting bracket from transfer case.
25. Using suitable engine lifting device, remove engine and transmission assembly diagonally out of engine compartment.
26. Remove transmission attaching bolts, noting length and position for installation, then remove transmission.
27. Reverse procedure to install, tightening all bolts to specifications. On models equipped with A/C, recharge A/C system.
