Engine: Service and Repair

1. Scribe hood hinge outlines on hood, then remove hood.
2. Drain cooling system and remove battery and air cleaner.
3. Remove heater and radiator hoses, then the radiator.
4. Carefully discharge refrigerant from A/C system (if equipped).
5. Remove vacuum lines, distributor cap and all electrical connectors.
6. Remove carburetor linkage, starter wires and oil pressure switch wires.
7. Disconnect A/C lines and hoses. Disconnect and cap power steering hoses.
8. Remove starter motor, alternator, charcoal canister and horns.
9. Disconnect exhaust pipe from exhaust manifold.
10. Remove bellhousing attaching bolts and inspection plate.
11. Attach a suitable C-clamp onto front bottom of torque converter housing to prevent converter from coming out.
12. Remove torque converter driveplate attaching bolts. Mark driveplate and torque converter for installation.
13. Place a suitable jack under transmission assembly.
14. Disconnect engine from torque converter driveplate.
15. Install suitable engine lifting equipment onto engine lifting eyes.
16. On 2 wheel drive models, remove engine front mount bolts.
17. On 4 wheel drive models, proceed as follows:
a. Working on left side of vehicle, remove starter, then the two screws attaching bracket to transmission bellhousing and two bracket to pinion nose adapter screws. Separate engine from insulator by removing upper nut, washer and through bolt from engine support bracket.
b. Working on right side of vehicle, remove two bracket to axle disconnect housing attaching bolts and one bracket to bellhousing attaching bolt. Separate engine from insulator by removing upper nut, washer and through bolt from engine support bracket.
18. On all models, remove engine from vehicle.
19. Reverse procedure to install.
