Transfer Case Shift Procedure

DISCUSSION:

A revised procedure has been developed to ease shift effort on the NP 231 transfer case. The procedure for shifting the NP 231 transfer case from 4H to 4L or from 4L to 4H, is as follows:

1. The vehicle should be moving at a speed under 3 miles per hour.

2. Shift the transmission into neutral, or depress the clutch and shift the transfer case to the desired range while the vehicle is moving.


Following this procedure will ease the shift effort required to make the shift. Owners manuals instructed owners to make the shift while the vehicle is stopped.
