Fuel Delivery and Air Induction: Description and Operation
Fuel Supply System:
TYPE
The fuel delivery system is a sequential Multi-Port Injection (SFI) type.
PURPOSE
The fuel delivery system supplies engine with proper amount of fuel at correct pressure.
CONSTRUCTION
The fuel delivery system consists of a fuel tank, fuel pump, fuel filter/pressure regulator, fuel rail, eight fuel injectors and required fuel lines.
OPERATION
Fuel is pumped from the fuel tank to the fuel injectors through the fuel filter/pressure regulator and fuel rail, by the electric in-tank fuel pump.
The mechanical regulator maintains pressure at injectors by allowing excess fuel to return to tank via return line.
The Powertrain Control Module (PCM) controls the amount of fuel injected by controlling the length of time injectors are energized, this period of time is known as "injector pulse width".
The injectors are fired individually, with each injector firing once per intake stroke.
