Distributor: Service and Repair
Fig 6 Distributor Connector:
Distributor Hold-Down:
REMOVAL
1. Disconnect negative battery cable and distributor wiring harness connector.
2. Remove distributor cap retaining screws and move cap to one side.
3. Rotate the engine until rotor points toward the intake plenum. Mark plenum for reference when installing distributor.
Distributor 4-Way Electrical Connector:
4. Remove distributor hold down nut and remove distributor.
INSTALLATION
- If engine has been cranked, with distributor removed, proceed to FINDING TOP DEAD CENTER (TDC) below.
- If the engine has not been cranked, with distributor removed, use the following procedure:
1. Position distributor in engine. Make certain that the 0-ring is properly seated on distributor. If 0-ring is cracked or nicked replace with new one.
2. Carefully engage distributor drive with gear on camshaft.
- When the distributor is installed properly, the rotor will be in line with previously scribe line on air intake plenum.
3. Install the distributor cap.
- Ensure sure all high tension wires are firmly in the cap towers.
4. Install hold-down nut and tighten to 14 Nm (124 in lb).
5. Connect distributor electrical connector to distributor. (Fig. 6).
6. Set ignition timing. SEE ADJUSTMENT PROCEDURES.
FINDING TOP DEAD CENTER (TDC)
Distributor Cap Terminal Routing:
1. Remove the number one spark plug. While blocking the plug hole with a finger, rotate crankshaft until number one piston is at top of compression stroke (air in cylinder will escape around finger tip). Pointer on bell housing should line up with the "0" TDC mark on flywheel.
2. Rotate the rotor to a position just ahead of the number one distributor cap terminal.
3. Install the distributor so that with the distributor fully seated, the rotor is under the number one tower of the distributor cap.
4. Install the distributor hold down bolt, (finger tight).
5. Proceed to step 2 of INSTALLATION.
