Electronic Instrument Cluster (EIC)
DESCRIPTIONThe electronic instrument cluster is easily distinguished from the electro/mechanical instrument cluster by its digital and linear displays.
The electronic cluster includes a digital speedometer, odometer, tachometer, oil pressure gauge, coolant temperature gauge, fuel gauge, and voltage gauge. It also has a series of warning indicator lamps designed to provide the driver with valuable information to ensure the vehicle is operating properly.
OPERATION
The electronic cluster receives virtually all of the information for its displays from the body control module and the powertrain control module via the CCD multiplex system.
The electronic cluster has two forms of diagnostic routines that are used to isolate problems within the cluster: self-diagnostics and CCD bus diagnostics. Self-diagnostics are accessed by simultaneously depressing the TRIP and TRIP RESET buttons. CCD bus diagnostic routines require the use of a scan tool.
Successful completion of the self-diagnostic test indicates if the problem is in the CCD bus, interfacing modules, connectors, wiring harnesses, or sensors outside the cluster. The body control module (not the electronic instrument cluster) stores the odometer information that is displayed on the instrument cluster. Therefore, when replacement of the electronic cluster is required, the odometer reading will not be affected. (See the Body Control Module\Description and Operation.)
