A/T - Harsh Transaxle Shifts: Overview

Harsh Transaxle Shifts

MODELS:
1992 - 1995 (AA) Spirit/Acclaim/LeBaron Sedan
1990 - 1995 (AS) Town & Country/Caravan/Voyager

Note:
This bulletin applies to vehicles equipped with a 3.0L engine and a 31TH transaxle with a identification number prior to XXX-2184-8136.

SYMPTOM/CONDITION:

The vehicle operator may complain of one or more of the following harsh conditions when the transaxle shifts:

Into Drive or Reverse while the vehicle is not moving ("Garage Shifts").

From 2nd to 3rd while reducing the throttle or with the throttle returned to idle ("Lift Foot Up Shifts").

From 2nd to 3rd while holding a constant throttle position.

From 3rd to 2nd during part throttle or wide open throttle kickdowns.

From 1st to 2nd in any throttle position.

DIAGNOSIS:

Check the transaxle fluid level and linkage adjustment and function using the procedures outlined in the appropriate service manual and correct as necessary. Test drive the vehicle, if harsh shifting still exists during garage shifts only perform Procedure A in the Repair Procedure Section, if any of the additional above conditions exist, perform Procedure B in the Repair Procedure Section.
