Procedure B

1. Using the procedure in the appropriate Service Manual, remove the transaxle assembly.

2. Plug all openings of the transaxle and clean the transaxle thoroughly, preferably with steam.

3. Remove the transaxle oil pan. Remove all sealant from the transaxle oil pan and clean the inside the oil pan and magnet.

4. Remove the 2 screws attaching the transaxle oil filter and separate the filter from the valve body (Refer to Figure 1).

5. Remove the parking rod E-clip and disconnect the parking rod from the valve body (refer to Figure 2).

6. Remove the neutral start/back-up lamp switch (refer to Figure 3).

7. Remove the 7 valve body attaching bolts and separate the valve body and governor tubes from the transaxle.

8. Do not clamp any portion of the valve body in a vise. Using special tool C-4553 remove the 16 valve body screws (refer to Figure 4). Separate the transfer plate and separator plate from the valve body (refer to Figure 5). Discard the separator plate.

9. Install the revised separator plate, P/N 4659533, with the number 3 punched out refer to Figure 6) and assemble the valve body. Torque the 16 valve body screws to 40 in. lbs. (5 Nm).

10. Loosen the lock nut and tighten the kickdown band adjusting screw.

11. Remove the 7 pump attaching bolts and separate the pump and pump gasket from the transaxle (refer to Figures 8, 9, 10, and 11. Do not disassemble the pump.

12. Loosen the kickdown band adjusting screw.

13. Remove the kickdown band and strut (refer to Figure 12).

14. Remove the front clutch assembly, the No. 2 thrust washer and rear clutch assembly (refer to Figures 13 and 14).

15. Remove the front clutch waved snap ring (refer to Figure 15).

16. Install the revised front clutch waved snap ring, P/N 4659652.

17. Disassemble the rear clutch assembly down to the piston spring (refer to Figures 16, 17, 18, and 19.

18. Install the revised rear clutch piston spring, P/N 4269623 (date code K4 or higher stamped on a finger) and reassemble the rear clutch assembly.

19. Install the rear clutch, No. 2 thrust washer and front clutch into the transaxle case.

20. Using an inch-pound torque wrench, tighten the kickdown band adjusting screw to 72 in. lbs., (8.1 Nm) then back the screw off 2-1/4 turns. Tighten the lock nut to 35 ft. lbs. (47 Nm).

21. Loosen the low/reverse band adjustment (refer to Figure 20). Disassemble the low/reverse servo (refer to Figures 21, 22 and 23).

22. Install the revised low/reverse cushion spring, P/N 4659179, and reassemble the low/reverse servo assembly.

23. Using an inch-pound torque wrench, tighten the low/reverse band adjusting screw to 41 in. lbs. (4.6 Nm) then back the screw off 3-1/2 turns. Tighten the lock nut to 10 ft. lbs. (14 Nm).

24. Disassemble the accumulator (refer to Figures 24, 25 and 26).

25. Install the revised accumulator piston, P/N 3743650, and revised accumulator spring, P/N 4659332. Reassemble the accumulator assembly.

26. Disassemble the kickdown servo (refer to Figures 27, 28 and 29).

27. Install the revised kickdown servo return spring, P/N 4659331, and reassemble the kickdown servo.

28. Attach the valve body to the transaxle assembly. Torque the 7 attaching bolts to **105 in. lbs. (12 Nm).**

29. Install and torque the neutral start/back-up lamp switch to 24 ft. lbs. (33 Nm).

30. Attach the parking rod to the valve body with the parking rod E-clip.

31. Install a new transaxle oil filter and transaxle oil filter gasket, P/N 4269649 and 4269671. Torque the 2 attaching screws to 40 in. lbs. (5 Nm).

32. Apply Mopar RTV Sealant, P/N 4318025, to the mating surface of the transmission oil pan and the underside of the attaching bolt heads. Install the transmission oil pan and torque the bolts to 165 in. lbs. (19 Nm).

33. Pour 4 quarts Mopar Automatic Transmission Fluid Type 7176, P/N 4467721, through the dipstick opening.

34. Start the engine and allow to idle for a minimum of one minute. With the parking brake and the service brakes applied, move the gear selector lever momentarily to each gear position. Place the gear selector lever in either park or neutral.

35. Add an appropriate a mount of transmission fluid to bring the level to 1/8 in. (3 mm) below the ADD mark on dipstick.

36. Recheck the fluid level after the transaxle is at normal operating temperature. The level should be in the HOT range of the dipstick.
