DISCUSSION:

Many changes have occurred to the 41TE/42LE and the following points may assist you when performing transaxle service.

DEEPER STEP ON THE UNDERDRIVE/OVERDRIVE REACTION PLATE

For the model year 1997, the thickness of the UD/OD reaction plate snap ring was increased along with modifications to the UD/OD reaction plate and corresponding groove in the input clutch retainer. These changes should not be misinterpreted as improperly machined components. Always refer to the appropriate parts manual when replacing components.

UNDERDRIVE CLUTCH RETURN SPRING

The squareness of this spring is specified in the compressed, working height, condition. In the free or unloaded condition they are often out of square. These springs should not be replaced based on their unloaded condition.

2/4 CLUTCH PISTON RETAINER

In 1994, a running change was made to include a lanced bleed hole in the 2/4 clutch piston retainer. This change is applicable to all 41TE and 42LE applications. This hole should not be misinterpreted as damage when new retainers are received (Figure 1).

UNDERDRIVE PISTON WEAR ON INNER DIAMETER

The underdrive piston may show signs of wear around the inner diameter. This is due to the interaction between the edges of the seal grooves on the input clutch hub and inner diameter of the underdrive piston (Figure 2). **This wear pattern should not be misinterpreted as the main reason for failure and further investigation will be required.**
