Drive Axles, Bearings and Joints: Adjustments

1. Position vehicle with wheels straight ahead and body weight distributed on all four tires.

Fig. 2 Driveshaft Measurement:

2. Measure direct distance between inner edge of outboard boot to inner edge of inboard boot on both driveshafts. This measurement (dimension "A") should be taken at bottom (six o'clock position) of driveshafts. Damper weights are used on left driveshaft assembly. Before measuring driveshaft length, damper should be removed from shaft. After specified measurement is completed, install damper weight and tighten damper weight attaching bolts to specifications.
3. Driveshaft length (dimension "A") must be within specifications in chart below:

Trans driveshaft side dimension "A"
type mm inch

FWD GKN right 476-486 18.7-19.1
FWD GKN left 184-194 7.2-7.6
AWD GKN right 292-302 11.5-11.9
AWD GKN left 184-194 7.2-7.6

If measurement is not within specifications, engine position must be corrected as follows:
a. Remove load from engine mounts by carefully supporting engine and transaxle assembly using a suitable jack.
b. Loosen right engine mount vertical bolts, then the front engine mount bracket-to-crossmember attaching bolts.

Fig. 4 Left Engine Mount Adjustment:

c. Pry engine to right or left as necessary to bring driveshaft length within specifications. Left engine mount is sleeved over long support bolt and shaft, to provide lateral adjustment whether or not engine weight is removed.
d. Tighten to specifications.
e. Center left engine mount, then recheck driveshaft length.
