Intermittent Grinding Noise From Starter

NOTE:
THIS BULLETIN APPLIES TO VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH A 3.3L OR 3.8L ENGINE AND STARTER P/N 4686045 PRODUCED IN JAPAN.
SYMPTOM/CONDITION:
A grinding noise may be heard when attempting to start the engine. The grinding noise may be very intermittent (1 in 50 start attempts).
DIAGNOSIS:
If the vehicle operator describes the above symptom, inspect the identification label on the starter for "Made in Japan" and a date code from 9P30 to 10P31 (refer to Illustration). If the starter is within the date code range and made in Japan, perform the repair procedure.
PARTS REQUIRED:
1 4686045 Starter
REPAIR PROCEDURE:
This bulletin involves installing a starter produced in Tennessee.
1. Record the radio station presets.
2. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
3. Raise the vehicle on an appropriate hoist.
4. Remove the starter attaching bolts.
5. Disconnect the two wires attached to the starter, and remove the starter from the vehicle.
6. Clean any dirt/corrosion from the wire terminals.
7. Reverse steps 2-5 to install the replacement starter (P/N 4686045 made in Tennessee).
8. Program the radio station presets recorded in step 1 and set the clock.
