Engine: Service and Repair

1. Scribe hood hinge locations and remove hood.
2. Drain cooling system, then remove battery and air cleaner assembly.
3. Disconnect radiator and heater hoses, then remove radiator and electronic cooling fans.
4. On models with air conditioning, remove A/C compressor mounting bolts and set compressor aside.
5. Disconnect vacuum lines, accelerator linkage and any speed control.
6. Remove throttle body, linkage, starter wires and oil pressure wire.
7. Disconnect and plug A/C and power steering lines, if equipped.
8. Release fuel system pressure as follows:
a. Release fuel tank pressure by loosening cap.
b. Disconnect fuel injector wiring harness.
c. Connect one jumper wire between electronic injector connector pin 1 and engine ground.
d. Attach second jumper wire to electronic injector connector pin 2, then touch other end of jumper wire to positive battery post to release fuel pressure. Do not touch positive terminal for more than five seconds.
9. Disconnect fuel lines and brackets.
10. On models with power steering, remove hoses and cap open ends.
11. Disconnect body wiring harness.
12. Raise and support vehicle, then disconnect exhaust pipe from exhaust manifold.
13. Remove starter motor and starter motor wires, then remove upper transmission housing bolts.
14. Lower vehicle and support transmission with transmission stand, then install suitable engine lifting equipment and attach hoist to engine eyebolts.
15. Loosen front engine mount through bolts and remove engine to transmission struts and bolts.
16. Lift engine until front engine mount insulators clear crossmember retaining brackets, then move forward until drive pinion shaft clears clutch disc.
17. Disconnect clutch release mechanism and remove transmission to clutch housing attaching bolts. Move engine forward until drive pinion shaft clears clutch disc.
18. Remove engine from vehicle.
19. Reverse procedure to install. Tighten all bolts and nuts to specifications.
