With Manufacturer's Scantool

NOTE: The following example was written for a DRB-II, procedures for other scan tools will vary. Follow manufacturer's instructions for the scan tool being used.

WARNING: Apply parking brake and/or block wheels before performing any test on an operating engine.

1. Connect the scan tool to the [1][2]diagnostic connector located in the engine compartment. The separate red clip is connected to the positive post of the battery.
2. With the scan tool properly connected, all character positions on the display should briefly illuminate, and the copyright message should appear.

- If the screen is blank after the scanner is attached to the vehicle, SEE Blank Screen Trouble Shooting below.

NOTE: At any time after the copyright screen, the user may press the F3 key for help.

3. If possible, START the engine and cycle the Automatic Transmission through all gears and activate the A/C system if applicable. Turn OFF the engine.

4. Turn the ignition switch ON, and access Head Fault Screen.

5. Record all the trouble code messages shown on the scan tool. Observe the Malfunction Indicator Lamp (Check Engine Lamp) on the instrument panel. The lamp should light for 2 seconds then go out (bulb check).

Notes:
- If trouble codes are present, begin testing at Diagnostic Charts/Trouble Code Tests/Test TC-1A Manufacturer Code Charts

ERASING TROUBLE CODES
To erase trouble codes, use the Erase Trouble Code data screen on the scan tool.

BLANK SCREEN TROUBLE SHOOTING

Data Link Connector Identification:






NOTE: Ensure the scanner is properly connected, before proceeding.

If The Screen Is Still Blank, Perform The Following Procedure:
a. Check all cable connectors for spread terminals, proper seating, and a snug fit.
b. Check scan tool cables for broken insulation and shorted wires.
c. Check scan tool cartridge and cartridge installation.
d. Check scan tool operation on another vehicle.

- If the scan tool screen is still blank, have the scan tool repaired.

On-Board Diagnostic Connector Identification (Wire Color May Vary By Model):






- If it now performs properly, check power and ground of the data link connector.
