Steering Column Removal

WARNING: Before servicing the steering column the airbag system must be disarmed. Failure to do so may result in accidental deployment of the airbag and possible personal injury.

NOTE: Whenever the steering column coupler is loosened or removed, a new coupler bolt must be installed.

1. Position front wheels straight ahead.
2. Disconnect negative (ground) cable from the battery.
3. Remove Data Link Connector from mounting bracket on knee blocker.





4. Remove knee blocker and brace.
5. Remove the airbag, refer to Air Bags and Seat Belts.





6. Disconnect wiring harness from horn switch.





7. Remove wiring connector from speed control switch if equipped.
8. Remove steering wheel retaining nut and remove steering wheel with an appropriate puller.
9. Remove tilt lever on steering column if equipped.





10. Remove screws attaching steering column shrouds to steering column and remove shrouds from steering column.





11. Remove wiring connector from the multi function switch.

NOTE: Wiring harness connector is retained to multi function switch, using an attaching bolt with a 7mm hex head. access to bolt is through rear of wiring harness connector.

12. Remove wiring harness from steering column.





13. Remove upper steering shaft coupler bolt and slide shaft down.





14. Place gear shift lever in Park. Pull PRNDL cable and twist to remove from position arm. Push tab on bottom of cable retainer, then squeeze sides to remove retainer from column.





15. Remove steering column mounting nuts.





16. Remove shift cable housing from bracket.





17. Remove shift cable from gear shift lever.
18. Remove steering column assembly from vehicle.
19. Remove switches, clock spring and key cylinder.
