Coolant Temperature Sensor/Switch (For Computer): Service and Repair

Fig 53 Powertrain Control Module (PCM):

WARNING: Hot, pressurized coolant can cause injury by scalding. cooling system must be partially drained before removing the coolant temperature sensor.

REMOVAL
1. Vehicles equipped with air conditioning:
a. Disconnect the negative battery cable at battery
b. Remove the three Jeep/Truck Engine Controller (JTEC) mounting bolts (Fig. 53) and remove JTEC. Do not disconnect the three 32-way connectors from the JTEC.
c. Remove engine cover.

Fig 54 A/C Compressor Support Bracket -- Typical:

d. Remove the A-shaped A/C compressor-to-intake manifold support bracket (three bolts) (Fig. 54).
2. Partially drain cooling system.

Fig. 66 Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor:

3. Disconnect electrical connector from sensor (Fig. 66).
4. Engines with air conditioning: when removing the connector from sensor, do not pull directly on wiring harness.
- Fabricate an L-shaped hook tool from a coat hanger (approximately eight inches long).
- Place the hook part of tool under the connector for removal.
- The connector is snapped onto the sensor.
- It is not equipped with a lock type tab.
5. Remove sensor from intake manifold.

INSTALLATION
1. Install sensor.
2. Tighten to 11 N.m (8 ft. lbs.) torque.
3. Connect electrical connector to sensor.
- The sensor connector is symmetrical (not indexed).
- It can be installed to the sensor in either direction.
4. Install the A-shaped A/C compressor-to-intake manifold support bracket (three bolts).
5. Replace any lost engine coolant.
6. Install JTEC.
- Tighten mounting bolts to 4 N.m (35 in. lbs.) torque.
7. Install engine cover.
