Steering Column Installation

NOTE: Remove shipping lock pin located on lower column jacket when installing a new steering column.

1. Install switches, clock spring and key cylinder.





2. Place steering column on floor of vehicle and install gear shift cable into lower mounting bracket of steering column assembly.





3. Install gear shift cable onto the ball stud on the steering column gear shift lever.
4. Install steering column assembly on studs in dash panel and loosely install the mounting nuts and washers.
5. Firmly slide steering column upward against the studs in dash panel. Be sure that the plastic capsules are fully seated in the upper mounting bracket. Center steering column in dash opening and tighten mounting nuts to 12 Nm (105 inch lbs.).
6. Install upper coupler on steering shaft and install a new bolt.
7. Tighten coupler bolt to 49 Nm (36 ft. lbs.).
8. Install wiring harness onto the column with attaching clips. Install multi function switch connector and tighten retaining bolt to 2 Nm (17 inch lbs.).
9. Install wiring harness connector to the remaining switches.





10. Install PRNDL cable and check adjustment. If cable is out of adjustment turn recessed hex head screw underneath cable retainer.
11. Install upper and lower steering column shrouds.
12. Install tilt lever on column if equipped.
13. Feed speed control switch and airbag module wiring leads through the rectangular hole in the steering wheel. Then feed the horn switch wiring lead through round hole in steering wheel.
14. Align master splines on steering wheel and shaft, and flats on steering wheel with formations on inside of clock spring. Then install steering wheel and tighten retaining nut to 61 Nm (45 ft. lbs.).
15. Connect horn switch wiring lead from clock spring, onto steering wheel horn switch wiring.
16. Connect speed control wiring from clock spring onto speed control switch if equipped.
17. Install the airbag refer to Air Bags and Seat Belts.
18. Install knee blocker and bracket.
19. Install Data Link Connector onto knee blocker.
20. Install negative battery terminal.
21. Test the operation of the horn, lights and any other functions that are steering column operated.

NOTE: Whenever the steering column is loosened or removed, the shift linkage must be adjusted, refer to Transmission and Drivetrain adjustment procedure.
