Horn Contact

WARNING: ON VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH AIR-BAGS, REPER TO AIRBAG BEFORE ATTEMPTING ANY STEERING WHEEL, STEERING COLUMN, OR INSTRUMENT PANEL COMPONENT DIAGNOSIS OR SERVICE. FAILURE TO TAKE THE PROPER PRECAUTIONS COULD RESULT IN ACCIDENTAL AIR-BAG DEPLOYMENT AND POSSIBLE PERSONAL INJURY.

1. Disconnect and isolate the battery negative cable. Remove the driver side airbag module from the steering wheel. Refer to Airbag Module in the Removal and Installation section of airbags for the procedures. Unplug the horn switch wire harness connector from the air-bag module.
2. Remove the lower shroud from the steering column. Refer to Turn Signal Switch and Hazard Warning Switch in the Removal and Installation section of Lighting and Horns/Turn Signal and Hazard Warning Systems for the procedures.
3. Inspect the horn contact on the upper surface of the multi-function switch housing. It must be contacting the conductive disc on the lower surface of the turn signal cancel cam. Also depress and release the horn contact. It should move freely into the multi-function switch housing when depressed, and spring back out into contact with the turn signal cancel cam when released. If OK, go to Step 5. If not OK, replace the faulty multi-function switch.
4. Unplug the steering column wire harness connector. Check for continuity between the horn contact and the metal jacket of the steering column. There should be no continuity If OK, go to Step 6. If not OK, repair the short circuit in the steering column wire harness or replace the faulty multi-function switch as required.
5. Check for continuity between the horn contact and the horn relay control circuit cavity in the steering column half of the steering column wire harness connector. There should be continuity. If OK, repair the circuit between the instrument panel half of the steering column wire harness connector and the horn relay in the junction block as required. If not OK, repair the open circuit in the steering column wire harness or replace the faulty multi-function switch assembly as required.
