3-4 Shift Solenoid, No RPM Drop 3-4 Shift (OBD II)
Name of Code:165 ($A5) 3-4 Shift Solenoid. No RPM Drop at 3-4 Shift
When Monitored:
Continuously with the key on and engine running.
Set Condition:
This code is set if the expected engine RPM drop does not occur within 4 seconds of the gear change being requested by the PCM. Three consecutive bad tests are required to set the code.
Theory of Operation:
This solenoid is used to control the gear change from 3rd to 4th (OD). The PCM energizes the solenoid by grounding the 3-4 Shift Solenoid Control Circuit. The Solenoid receives it's 12-volt supply from the transmission relay. The PCM will not allow 4th gear (OD) if the transmission oil temp is below 32° F.The PCM will also disable 4th gear if the transmission oil temperature goes above 260° F.
Transmission effects:
The transmission will not have 4th gear. The MIL will illuminate.
Possible Causes:
- Faulty 3-4 Shift Solenoid
- Sticky 3-4 shift valve, 3-4 timing valve, and/or 3-4 quick fill valve
- Internal transmission leakage
- Faulty Overdrive Clutch
- Internal controller failure (PCM)
