Steering: Description and Operation

Steering Pump, Gear And Oil Cooler - 4X4:

The power steering system uses a power assisted recirculating-ball type steering gear on 4x4 vehicles and rack and pinion steering gear on 4x2 vehicles.
Power assist is provided by an engine mounted hydraulic pump. The pump supplies hydraulic fluid pressure to the steering gear. Some vehicles are equipped with an oil cooler mounted below the power steering pump.
Power steering systems consist of:
- Steering column
- Recirculating-ball steering gear on 4x4 vehicles
- Rack and pinion steering gear on 4x2 vehicles
- Steering linkage on 4x4 vehicles
- Belt driven hydraulic steering pump
- Pump pressure and return hoses
