Turn Signals: Service and Repair
TURN SIGNAL CANCELLING CAM REPLACEMENTWARNING: ON VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH AIRBAGS, REFER TO AIR BAGS AND SEAT BELTS/AIR BAGS BEFORE ATTEMPTING ANY STEERING WHEEL, STEERING COLUMN, OR INSTRUMENT PANEL COMPONENT DIAGNOSIS OR SERVICE. FAILURE TO TAKE THE PROPER PRECAUTIONS COULD RESULT IN ACCIDENTAL AIRBAG DEPLOYMENT AND POSSIBLE PERSONAL INJURY.
REMOVAL
1. Disconnect and isolate the battery negative cable.
2. Remove the clockspring from the steering column upper shaft, but do not remove the clockspring wire harness from the column. Refer to Clockspring in the Replacement of Air Bags and Seat Belts/Air Bags for the procedures.
Shaft Lock Shield Compressor:
3. Install a compressor adapter (Special Tool 7100) and a compressor tool (Special Tool C-4156) on the steering column upper shaft.
Turn Signal Cancel Cam Remove/Install:
4. Compress the shaft lock shield far enough to access and remove the retaining ring from the groove in the upper steering column shaft.
5. Remove the compressor tool, adapter, and the shaft lock shield from the steering column.
6. Remove the turn signal cancel cam from the upper steering column shaft.
INSTALLATION
1. Coat the conductive disc on the lower surface of the turn signal cancel cam evenly with the synthetic grease included in the replacement part package.
2. Position the turn signal cancel cam onto the upper steering column shaft.
3. Position the shaft lock shield onto the upper steering column shaft. Be certain to index the alignment splines in the hub of the shaft lock shield with the splines on the upper steering column shaft.
4. Install a new shaft lock shield retaining ring onto the center mandrel of the compressor tool (Special Tool C-4156).
5. Install a compressor adapter (Special Tool 7100) and a compressor tool (Special Tool C-4156) onto the steering column upper shaft.
6. Compress the shaft lock shield far enough to slide the retaining ring off of the mandrel of the compressor tool and into the groove in the upper steering column shaft.
7. Install the clockspring onto the steering column upper shaft. Refer to Clockspring in the Replacement of Air Bags and Seat Belts/Air Bags for the procedures. Be certain that the steering column wire harnesses are routed so that they will not be pinched or stretched.
8. Reconnect the battery negative cable.
