Cylinder Head
DESCRIPTIONFig. 5
The aluminum alloy cylinder heads feature cross-flow type intake and exhaust ports (Fig. 5). Valve guides and inserts are hardened cast iron. Valves of heat resistance steel are arranged in a V with each camshaft; on center. To improve combustion speed the chambers are a compact spherical design with a squish area of approximately 30 percent of the piston top area. The cylinder heads are common to either cylinder bank by reversing the direction of installation.
OPERATION
The cylinder head closes the combustion chamber, allowing the pistons to compress the air/fuel mixture for ignition. The valves are actuated by the lobe profiles on the camshaft to open and close at specified duration to either allow clean air in the combustion chamber or the exhaust gases out; depending on the stroke of the ending
