Coolant Temperature Sensor/Switch (For Computer): Service and Repair

REMOVAL

WARNING: HOT, PRESSURIZED COOLANT CAN CAUSE INJURY BY SCALDING. COOLING SYSTEM MUST BE PARTIALLY DRAINED BEFORE REMOVING COOLANT TEMPERATURE SENSOR.

The engine coolant temperature sensor is installed into a water jacket at front of intake manifold near rear of generator. If equipped with this engine, the engine cover and air cleaner housing must be removed.

1. Disconnect negative battery cable at battery.
2. In this Engine Only:
a. Remove engine cover.
b. Remove air cleaner housing. Refer to Air Cleaner Housing Removal/installation.
3. Place a small mirror above sensor connector.
4. Disconnect electrical connector from sensor. When removing connector from sensor, do not pUll directly on wiring harness. Fabricate an L-shaped hook tool from a coat hanger (approximately eight inches long). Place hook part of tool under connector for removal. The connector is snapped onto the sensor. It is not equipped with a lock type tab.
5. Partially drain cooling system.

INSTALLATION
1. Install sensor into intake manifold.
2. Tighten to 11 Nm (8 ft. lbs.) torque.
3. Connect electrical connector to sensor. The sensor connector is symmetrical (not indexed). It can be installed to the sensor in either direction.
4. Replace any lost engine coolant.
5. In this Engine Only:
a. Install engine cover.
b. Install air cleaner housing. Refer to Air Cleaner Housing Removal/installation.
6. Connect negative battery cable at battery.
