Headlamp: Description and Operation

Headlamps on the Ram Van/Ram Wagon are modular units. Each unit contains a headlamp module, and a dual filament replaceable bulb. The headlamp switch is located on the instrument panel. The headlamp switch controls the parking lamps, the headlamps, the interior lamps, and instrument cluster illumination. The headlamp switch also contains a rheostat for controlling the illumination level of the instrument cluster lamps

The headlamps are controlled by the headlamp switch and the multifunction switch. The headlamp switch has an off position, a parking lamp position, and a headlamp on position. High beams are controlled by the multifunction switch on the steering column. The headlamp switch cannot be repaired, it must be replaced. Each headlamp unit can be serviced individually.

The headlamp (or security) relay is a International Standards Organization (ISO) micro-relay. The terminal designations and functions are the same as a conventional ISO relay. However, the micro-relay terminal orientation (or footprint) is different, current capacity is lower, and the relay case dimensions are smaller than those of the conventional ISO relay.

The headlamp relay is a electromechanical device that switches battery current to the headlamps when the high-line Central Timer Module (CTM) grounds the relay coil.

The headlamp relay is located in the relay and fuse block, which is located on the driver side end of the instrument panel in the passenger compartment. The headlamp relay cannot be repaired and, if faulty or damaged, it must be replaced.
