Engine - Surge/Lack of Power in 3rd Gear/Erratic Shifts

NUMBER: 18-006-02 REV. C

GROUP: Vehicle Performance

DATE: June 3, 2002

THIS BULLETIN IS BEING PROVIDED IN ADVANCE. THE MDS2 MUST BE OPERATING WITH CIS/ISIS **CD2110** OR HIGHER, AVAILABLE **JUNE 24**, 2002.

THIS BULLETIN SUPERSEDES TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN 18-006-02 REV. **B**, DATED **MAY 6**, 2002, WHICH SHOULD BE REMOVED FROM YOUR FILES.

ALL REVISIONS ARE HIGHLIGHTED WITH **ASTERISKS** AND INCLUDE VEHICLES AND MODELS ADDRESSED, A NEW CALIBRATION FOR 1999 VEHICLES.

SUBJECT:
Flash: Surge **(Beaming)**, Lack of Power in 3rd Gear, and No 3/4
Upshift After 4/3 Downshift

OVERVIEW:

This bulletin involves selectively erasing and reprogramming the JTEC Powertrain Control Module (PCM) with new software (**99Cal19D**, 00Cal19, 01Cal04, and 01Cal18).

NOTE:
**THIS BULLETIN ADDS 1999 5.2L AND 5.9L (BE/BR) 4WD RAM TRUCKS WITH SYMPTOM # 2 (COMMONLY CALLED "BEAMING") BELOW.**

MODELS:

**1999** - 2001 (BE/BR) Ram Truck

NOTE:
THIS BULLETIN APPLIES TO ALL **1999 THROUGH** 2001 (BE/BR) RAM TRUCKS EQUIPPED WITH A 5.2L, 5.9L, OR 8.0L ENGINE AND CALIBRATION LEVEL PRIOR TO (LESS OR LOWER THAN) THOSE LISTED IN THE OVERVIEW ABOVE EXCEPT 3500 5.9L CALIFORNIA CAB CHASIS.

SYMPTOM/CONDITION:

Some vehicles may exhibit one or more of the following performance conditions:

1. Perceived lack of power in third gear due to converter lock-up in 3rd gear. This reprogramming eliminates 3rd gear lock up.

2. Surge after lock-up (40-45 m.p.h.) in 4th gear. This reprogramming raises torque converter lock-up speed to 52 m.p.h.

3. Transmission does not upshift from 3rd gear after a 4/3 downshift. (Most often noticed when cruise control is engaged.)

PARTS REQUIRED:

EQUIPMENT REQUIRED:

REPAIR PROCEDURE:

1. Flash the controller using the MDS2 (Mopar Diagnostic System) and DRBIII(R).

NOTE:
DUE TO THE PCM REPROGRAMMING PROCEDURE, A DTC MAY BE SET IN OTHER MODULES (EATX, BCM, MIC, SKIM, ETC.) WITHIN THE VEHICLE, IF SO EQUIPPED. SOME DTC'S MAY CAUSE THE MIL TO ILLUMINATE. ALL DTC5S RELATE TO A LOSS OF COMMUNICATIONS WITH THE MODULE THAT IS BEING REPROGRAMMED. CHECK ALL MODULES, RECORD THE FAULTS, AND ERASE THESE FAULTS PRIOR TO RETURNING THE VEHICLE TO THE CUSTOMER. ERASE ANY FAULTS IN THE PCM ONLY AFTER ALL OTHER MODULES HAVE HAD THEIR FAULTS ERASED.

NOTE:
THE FOLLOWING STEPS ARE REQUIRED BY LAW.

2. Type the necessary information on the "Authorized Software Update Label" p/n 04669020. Attach the label to the PCM and cover the label with the clear plastic overlay (Fig. 1).

3. Type the necessary information on the "Authorized Modification Label" p/n **04275086AB** and attach the label near the VECI label (Fig. 2).

POLICY:
